As an Umpire & Scorer in Cricket, I am now retired. My main duties were as a panel umpire for the Thames Valley League. I have also scored for Berkshire U23's (Equivalent to Minor Counties 2nd XI), U17s, U15s, and clubs + XL club, Berkshire O50s, Berkshire Gents and C.C.C. President's XI. I also stand as umpire for British Universities competitions, 3 Counties Sunday League Junior competitions and many friendlies.
As a member of Berkshire C.O.A. I am less involved but I am on the Umpires and Scorers list for Finchampstead Cricket Club and did many varied games for Wokingham C.C. Crown Wood C.C. and Newbury C.C. also found some games for me.
I joined the A.C.S. (Stats & Historians). Some articles appearing in the Cricket section will be associated with the latter.
This is a non-profit making Sports business based on 50 years or more interest in sport. Although, I, myself did not aspire to any great wonder at any of my own chosen sports, in my youth I was always involved in kick arounds with a football until I signed on to my parish club in the old Reading & District League. Cricket took up summer months and after a long spell as a full-time musician during my 20s, I became involved again. Changing trends took me to the neighbouring parish - that of my birthplace. I became a Qualified Scorer and notched up some qualifications as an Umpire too. Then the Football Club President, Richard Whitchurch-Bennett asked me to write Press reports for the 1st team. Today, I still follow the fortunes of Arsenal, Reading and a few other clubs at Professional level as well as what happens at junior and 3rd team levels. I was less involved in Rugby Union but I did play blind-side wing-forward a lot over 5 seasons at school. Probably because my great-grandmother was blind and read Braille. She died long before I was born!!!
I am a one-man band. Well accustomed to writing all my songs and poems in longhand, I am now getting used to sports writing on the stenographic keyboard.
At least with sports writing, I do not have to make it rhyme and scan then set it to music!
